This page is dedicated to the Siemens-Duewag SD-400 LRV car that is used in Pittsburgh.

The Siemens SD-400 LRV is an electric light rail vehicle (LRV) built by Siemens-Duewag AG. It is powered by four individual Siemens DC-IBGT electric motors with each one developing 200 horsepower (149 kW) & creating a combined total power output of 800 horsepower (597 kW). Electric current is recived via an overhead catenary wire which supplies 650 volts into its DC motors. The unit's frame is also built upon a A-B-C truck configuration mounted underneath a double-ended articulated body, which has a seating capacity for 72 people and room for an additional 106 standing passengers. Empty weight of each car is 89,560 lbs!

More than 80 SD-400 units were produced between 1985 and 1993, with all being manufactured at Siemens' primary manufacturing plant at their home base in Germany. The SD-400 is currently used by two transit operators, these are both the Port Authority as well as Bi-State Transit (MetroLink) in St. Louis, Missouri.

55 cars bought, 4101- 4155, Built 1985-1987, later renumbered 4201- 4255 after their rehab.

Now let's look at the newly arrived 4211!

4211 is a Siemens SD-400 LRV that is the first one to come back from CAF re-fitted to the new car specs. It really is not bad at all. They decided to carry over all the interior trim, as well as some modifications to the dash area, and did away with the old white, yellow and black exterior in favor of the new silver. I think it looks sharp!

Here is 4211 sitting quietly on a yard track. The car is not yet ready for revenue service.

Here is a better day shot of the car, and the style difference is obvious to the 4115 behind it. They even changed the AC system on the roof!

For all intents and purposes, it is the same car, just new electronics paint, and...

The revamped dash area. Looks pretty much the same as the one way above on this page, except for a few changes...

The interior is re-done exactly to match the 43XX cars.

Just another view from the other end.
